First United Methodist Church of Lafayette |

Drawing on a rich heritage of being the oldest Protestant congregation in Lafayette (founded in 1845), the people of First United Methodist Church are actively engaged in purposefully living out their lives as disciples of Jesus Christ. We believe passionately in God’s grace and in how it is through that grace that our lives have purpose and meaning.
We are a church family with people of all ages, educational levels, family configurations, economic circumstances and length of time we have been a disciple of Christ. However, we have some things in common – a love for Christ, a love for each other, and a passion for serving Christ by having everyone know of Christ’s love and our love for them. Through worship, study, prayer, missions and fellowship, we are growing closer to God, to each other, and to those we serve in and with in Christ’s name
We are committed to being in ministry in our present downtown location just a few blocks from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. This place provides a very unique setting for ministry for it allows us to be a connection between the powerful leaders of government and business, the inquisitive university mind, and people who are often forgotten by society. We use several of our buildings for outreach ministries.
I have been the pastor at FUMC Lafayette since June of 2006. Prior to that time, I served for 7 ½ years as Associate Pastor at FUMC in Baton Rouge and before that I practiced law for 15 years. I believe so strongly in God’s grace because I have had to rely upon it myself so many times. I also believe that we are each called by God to be in ministry and that I was just as much a minister for God when I practiced law as I am today – it was just a different form and setting for ministry.
As Jesus said, “Come and see.” We don’t have all the answers and we are not perfect. But, we are striving to be faithful disciples and we are growing in love through the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
